It’s a grey crisp Monday morning at the BFC Show Space, Victoria House, the audience trickle in to see Sean Suen’s Autumn/Winter ’16 collection.
This collection reflects the connection between himself and the other self in the parallel world, Sean Suen draws on inspiration of Chinese Chess, playing with opposites as a way to bring his collection to life, it’s not only about the communication between you and your opponent, history and reality cultures of East and West.
Following the patterns of the chessboard the Criss-cross patterns are reflected on the garments. With the “antique” idea that Earth was square and Heaven was round, this is symbolised on the garment as round metal pieces studding on the apparels. Other pieces take the appearance of Chinese pieces which should move according to different rules with imagination and creation which indicates the various paths in life.
The three key principles that influences Sean Suen’s design, are amusing, dynamic and chic, each garment is defined and characterised. Within each of his collections individual pieces are treated as a small project, giving Suen a unique perspective towards his work. The garments are intricately layered with mixed fabrics and contrasting cuts, the collection focuses on stylish and functional silhouettes.
Seven years ago GQ China was launched and quickly established the status of the most important men’s brand in China. Sean Suen’s Spring/Summer ’16 was the first successful collaborative show with GQ China.
